It's common for "fans" to dig trenches across the Baja 1000 route after the pre-runners have surveyed it and before the racers run, so the racing trucks go flying. Safety appears to not be an often-thought concern.

I feel badly for the dead and injured but in Mexico many of these public events are unregulated and public safety is not a major concern.

NO, NO, NO!! The "unidentified patient" is singular, "their" is plural. Using "their" as a singular pronoun is just plain wrong. Yes, the English language needs a non-gender-specific singular pronoun (other than the obnoxious "s/he"), but "their" is not it.

That ranks right up there with saying "Myself and Battalion Seven are on the scene." Nope, "myself" is not on the scene, I am. "Battalion Seven and I are on the scene." "Myself" is not going to the store, I am. It doesn't make you sound professional, it makes you sound pompous and ignorant.

And obviously, this is NOT aimed at the responders, but at the reporters, who ought to know better.

Sadly the financial issues hitting R/M are thanks to the same budget cuts hitting everybodyelse from The Sequester. Budget cuts are limiting reimbursements to any and all organizations who rely highly on fed reimbursements from Medicare and Medicaid. On top of that R/M is the 911 provider in several areas of the greater Phoenix area which only complicates the issue with non payments from uninsured (which may get better under ACA but Im not going to hold my breath)

we do see ourselves in this. what people don't understand is that it is an insult to be called an ambulance driver. By just calling us that, it diminishes what we do and what we stand for. Last time I looked, one did not go to school to be a trash man, but some go 2 yrs to be a paramedic.

If one called a law enforcement officer a ticket writer, or a firefighter a nozzle jockey offense would be taken. Really how would a news anchor like being called a bunch of gum bangers, jaw flappers, or wind bags. Thanks... Not!

Pat, you still miss the point.... Either discrimination (for any reason) is wrong or it's not. If it's not, you haven't a leg to stand on when you're the victim of affirmative action, nepotism, or cronyism because you support discrimination as long s it's the kind you want at the moment. Giving extra points for being a city resident is a form of discrimination and does NOT allow the city to hire the best available individuals - both the citizens and the FF's suffer because of this.

They are getting the "best people from Buffalo?" That simply means you have limited your potential hiring pool to only a small group of people - there is no way you can be getting the best available people and you know it. You have cut your potential hiring pool by more than 78% - using 2010 census figures.

Logic dictates if the "best available people " came from Buffalo, there would be no need for a residency rule because no suburbanite would ever score high enough to get hired. All the top scorers would come from Buffalo, which I would bet, is not happening and that's why the city wants to stack the deck with a residency rule.

You attempt to counter an argument about ethics with a "two wrongs make a right" type of argument. Whether or not the suburbs allow city residents in their parks is moot to this discussion. This is about the ethics of eliminating the best potentially available candidates for a job.

If you want to work with your nephews and neighbors, then tell them to run a little faster and study a little harder than the suburbanites! What you propose - stacking the deck in their favor with "residency points - is akin to nepotism and cronyism - both highly unethical and immoral.

No, a large pool of minority candidates does not mean they will pass the test, that has been proven time and time again in cities like Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Detroit, etc.... That's why the federal government stacks the deck in their favor with hiring quotas and limiting the number of whites able to take the test with things like residency points.

You claim the people that "want it the most and put the most time in always get hired." Yet, you want to penalize those people because of where they live? You're talking out of both sides of your mouth, here. I do agree the people that want it the most are the people that will score the best on the entrance exam. I do NOT agree with artificially raising somebody's score for ANY reason - residency, military veteran, or belonging to any one of the various minority groups.

Buffalo is NOT autonomous, it relies on its neighbors for all kinds of things, from their tax dollars that pay for its infrastructure to their economic impact on businesses and jobs. If the people of the suburbs stopped spending their money in Buffalo, and took their jobs out of the city to the suburbs, you would see the city collapse - much like has happened to Detroit.
